Myanmar earthquake causes tremors in Hanoi, HCMC

HCMC – A magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar at around 1:20 p.m. (Vietnam time), March 28, sending tremors through parts of Vietnam, where residents in Hanoi and HCMC reported feeling the shaking.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake had a magnitude of 7.7, while Vietnam’s Institute of Geophysics measured it at 7.3 with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Germany’s GFZ Helmholtz Center for Geosciences recorded a magnitude of 6.9 in Myanmar and 7.3 in Bangkok, Thailand.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, though tremors were felt in Vietnam’s two largest cities.

In Hanoi, residents in offices and high-rise buildings reported strong shaking as the earthquake triggered noticeable tremors.

In HCMC, people in districts 1, 3, 6, 8, 11, Phu Nhuan, and Thu Duc City also felt the tremors, with some evacuating buildings. Shoppers and workers in commercial centers and tall buildings were seen moving quickly outside as the shaking occurred.
