HCMC – General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and President of China Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Vietnam on April 14-15 at the invitation of Vietnam’s Party General Secretary To Lam and State President Luong Cuong.
The visit, announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today, April 11, will mark the fourth state visit to Vietnam by Xi in his capacity as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and President of China. His earlier visits took place in 2015, 2017 and 2023.
The forthcoming visit is of great significance as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China (1950–2025).
During a phone conversation in January, the Party General Secretaries of the two countries agreed to launch the “Vietnam–China People-to-People Exchange Year 2025” and coordinate efforts to celebrate the anniversary with a wide range of commemorative activities.
Xi’s most recent visit to Hanoi in December 2023 resulted in a joint statement aimed at further deepening the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between China and Vietnam. Both sides also pledged to enhance cooperation in various fields under the vision of building a Vietnam–China community with a shared future of strategic importance.
In August 2024, Party General Secretary To Lam paid a state visit to China. The two nations issued another joint statement reaffirming their commitment to strengthening strategic ties and setting the direction for future collaboration.
The relationship between Vietnam and China has continued to grow in recent years, with both sides maintaining high-level exchanges and expanding economic cooperation. During a sideline meeting at the APEC Summit 2024 in Lima, Peru, Vietnamese President Luong Cuong delivered warm regards from top Vietnamese leaders to President Xi. He reiterated that strengthening ties with China remains a strategic priority in Vietnam’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, and diversification.
In response, President Xi reaffirmed China’s support for Vietnam’s development and political stability, expressing confidence in the success of Vietnam’s 14th National Party Congress scheduled for early 2026.
Bilateral trade between the two nations reached a record US$205.2 billion in 2024, making China Vietnam’s largest trading partner and the first country with which Vietnam’s trade volume surpassed the US$200-billion mark. Conversely, Vietnam remains China’s largest ASEAN trading partner.
