Vietnam, Azerbaijan upgrade ties to strategic partnership

HCMC – Vietnam and Azerbaijan have agreed to form a strategic partnership after talks between Party General Secretary To Lam and President Ilham Aliyev in Baku.

Following a welcome ceremony at the Presidential Palace on the afternoon of May 7 (local time), President Ilham Aliyev, who is also chairman of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, held talks with Party General Secretary To Lam.

Vietnam’s Party leader To Lam stressed that Vietnam regards Azerbaijan as an important partner in the region and hopes bilateral relations will continue to grow in the coming years.

To tap the untapped potential in bilateral cooperation and navigate global uncertainties, he proposed strengthening the role of the Intergovernmental Committee to boost cooperation in emerging sectors such as processing, engineering, and chemicals.

He called for deeper cooperation in energy and oil, greater investment promotion, human resource training, and joint efforts in clean and renewable energy.

He also urged stronger business ties, more agricultural investment, early signing of an investment protection agreement, improved maritime and rail links, and enhanced local-level cooperation.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pledged to take concrete steps to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in trade, investment, and economic cooperation. Highlighting Azerbaijan’s strategic location, he expressed interest in partnering with Vietnam in logistics, seaports, railways, aviation, and renewable energy.

The two leaders emphasized the historic significance of the joint statement establishing a strategic partnership, saying that it would lay the groundwork for stronger bilateral ties, enabling both countries to capitalize on their respective strengths and promote mutual development, regional stability, and global peace.

Vietnam is ready to serve as a bridge for Azerbaijan to strengthen ties with Southeast Asia, while Azerbaijan will act as a gateway for Vietnam to expand cooperation with Central Asia.

Following their talks, Party General Secretary To Lam and President Ilham Aliyev witnessed the signing of several cooperation agreements and issued a joint statement establishing the Vietnam-Azerbaijan strategic partnership, marking the significant and comprehensive outcomes of the visit.
