HCMC — Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) is preparing to break ground on the second runway of Long Thanh International Airport by late May or early June, aiming to complete the work within 12 months.
The runway is expected to be operational alongside the first runway when the first phase of the airport comes online in the first half of 2026, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
The first runway is ready for calibration flights, three months ahead of schedule.
Work on the key infrastructure is progressing. The T1 access road is nearly complete, with two-thirds of its asphalt layers finished by April. The T2 route is being accelerated to meet the September 2 deadline.
Apron and fueling systems are on schedule and expected to be ready by the end of 2025.
Vietnam Airlines has completed the basic design for its maintenance hangar and passed technical assessments. Construction is set to begin in June. Vietjet is finalizing its design and selecting contractors for its facility.
Package 4.8, involving over 20,000 tasks, remains a bottleneck. Contractors are working around the clock to meet deadlines. Drainage systems and 22 kilometers of technical tunnels are scheduled for completion in June.
The project faces a shortage of crushed stone. In March and April, the daily supply averaged 12,000 cubic meters, below the required 20,000 cubic meters. A pre-Lunar New Year holiday stockpile of nearly one million cubic meters has helped maintain progress.
ACV has requested the Ministry of Construction to work with local authorities to secure construction materials and avoid further delays.
