HCMC – Vietnam seeks to work with the U.S. to develop harmonized, non-discriminatory rules of origin that align with global supply chains and support businesses in both countries.
Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien held an online meeting on June 19 with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
They discussed solutions and directions to address key outstanding issues in the negotiations on the bilateral reciprocal trade agreement between the two countries.
Minister Dien reiterated Vietnam’s request for the U.S. to consider areas of key interest, including reciprocal tariff policy and market access for several major Vietnamese export sectors.
He stressed Vietnam’s desire to cooperate with the U.S. in developing practical and harmonized rules of origin that align with global supply chain dynamics, ensure fair treatment, and support businesses from both nations.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Secretary Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer appreciated Vietnam’s efforts and goodwill in addressing U.S. concerns, saying that these steps would enable the U.S. to consider reciprocal tariff policy that take into account Vietnam’s specific conditions and circumstances.
They reaffirmed the United States’ commitment and willingness to negotiate with Vietnam toward an agreement that serves the interests of both countries.
U.S. Trade Representative Greer said the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) would soon finalize and send Vietnam the necessary documents for both sides to focus discussions on reaching an outcome that aligns with the interests of both countries.
