Crowds gathered at Hanoi’s Mai Dich Cemetery on the morning of July 8 (14th day of the 6th lunar month) to pay tribute to late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on the first anniversary of his passing.

Nguyen Trung Kien, 39, from Nghia Lo, Lao Cai, said that he departed from his hometown at 5 a.m. to arrive in time to offer incense at the cemetery. Many young people also joined groups and organizations to visit the late leader’s resting place. “After visiting his hometown in Dong Anh, Hanoi, we came here to offer incense,” Nguyen Nam Anh, a student from Class K13 at the Academy of Youth, told the Vietnamnet news site.

Although Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has passed on, his legacy in Party building and his exemplary life of integrity and modesty continue to resonate. His words remain etched in the public memory: “Honor is the most sacred and noble value of all.”

Rare albino baby turtle born on Con Dao

A rare albino sea turtle has hatched at the “Let’s Get Cracking” hatchery, located within the Six Senses Con Dao Resort, marking only the second recorded case of this extraordinary genetic phenomenon in less than two years. The previous albino hatchling emerged in October 2023.

The albino turtle hatched from a nest that contained 115 eggs. The eggs were either collected from various locations within Con Dao National Park or laid naturally by mother turtles on the hatchery’s beach. The incubation process took place under natural conditions.

According to experts, the occurrence of albino sea turtles in the wild is estimated at around 1:100,000 to 1:50,000. Aika, the conservation program manager at the hatchery, told the VnExpress news site: “Witnessing the hatching of an albino sea turtle for the second time is a powerful reminder of what long-term conservation efforts can accomplish.”

Good deeds of a cycling club

Over the past six years, the Binh Duong Cycling Club with some 10,600 members has donated hundreds of bicycles and three-wheeled vehicles to disabled and disadvantaged people in HCMC and the Central Highlands.

The Binh Duong Cycling Club was established on social networks in 2019 by Le Thanh Tai, who lives in Lai Thieu Ward, HCMC. Tai told thanhnien.vn that the club gathers bicycle lovers who are well aware of the benefits of cycling, adding that all the club’s administrators have contributed a lot to the development of cycling and charitable activities over the past years.

Seeing the need of poor and disabled people, Nguyen Ngoc Phuong Thao, an administrator of the club, began to call for cash and old and new bicycles and three-wheeled vehicles from the club’s members. Twice per year, they donated 50 brand-new bicycles to needy students in the Central Highlands. They also presented four hand-powered wheelchairs and four electric three-wheeled vehicles to disabled people per year.

The Binh Duong Cycling Club has also handed over from VND500,000 to VND1,000,000 and 50 gifts (10kg of rice, cooking oil and soy sauce each) to local disabled people over the past two years.

Free loaves of bread available in town

A cupboard displaying loaves of bread offered free to those in need has been placed in front of a traditional medicine shop on Hai Thuong Lan Ong Street in Cho Lon Ward, HCMC, with a small signboard saying “Free bread. Take one loaf each, please. Thanks.”

The big cupboard is filled with loaves of bread every morning. Its front glass has a round hole for people to take the bread out. There is also a big bottle of potable water with plastic glasses for passersby to drink at will.

The founder of the cupboard offering free loaves of bread and the free bottle of water is Bich Phuong, 50, owner of the traditional medicine shop. Phuong told thanhnien.vn that she has offered free bread and water over the past five years, adding that she buys 150 loaves of bread every day. Most of the recipients are lottery ticket sellers, scrap buyers, disabled people and motorbike taxi drivers.

The kind woman and her relatives also prepare free vegetarian portions for those in need on the 1st and the 15th days of every lunar month.
