HCMC – The central coast province of Nghe An will build a 60-kilometer expressway to connect the North-South Expressway with the Thanh Thuy Border Gate and facilitate a more rapid transit route between Vietnam and Laos.
Estimated to cost nearly VND24 trillion, the Vinh–Thanh Thuy Expressway is classified as a national key infrastructure project. The Nghe An People’s Committee will oversee the project as decided by the prime minister.
The expressway will start at the Hung Tay interchange, connecting with the Dien Chau–Bai Vot Expressway, and end at the access road to the Thanh Thuy Border Gate economic zone. It will pass through nine communes in Nghe An.
Preparations and site clearance would take place this year, construction would begin in 2026. The road is expected to be substantially completed in 2028 before opening in 2029.
The six-lane expressway would have a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour, with some sections limited to 60–80 kilometers per hour. Compensation, support, and resettlement will be handled as separate subprojects by local authorities.
Once operational, the expressway would shorten travel times from Thanh Thuy Border Gate to Nghe An’s urban areas and seaports, reduce logistics costs, attract investment, and support the province’s industrial, tourism, and mining sectors.
The expressway is part of the planned Hanoi–Vientiane Expressway, the fastest connection between the two capitals, and is expected to facilitate trade from Laos to Vietnam’s coastal economic zones. It will also strengthen the East–West economic corridor, reducing transport times and improving links between the Mekong River region and the Indian and Pacific oceans.
