Landslides sever traffic on Lo Xo Pass

HCMC – Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days has triggered serious landslides along the Ho Chi Minh Road section passing through Lo Xo Pass in the central province of Quang Ngai, leaving dozens of people stranded.

At least three major landslides have been reported, with the most severe occurring near Dak Zon Bridge in Dak Plo Commune, Quang Ngai. The slide, stretching some 300 meters, buried the road under an estimated 20,000 cubic meters of soil, rocks, and fallen trees, blocking all traffic.

Local authorities have mobilized four excavators and two bulldozers to clear the debris. However, persistent downpours and strong runoff from the slopes have made recovery efforts extremely difficult and dangerous.

Around 40 vehicles, mostly trucks, and about 70 people have been trapped between two blocked sections of the road for nearly two days. Rescue teams from the provincial traffic police and the Lo Xo Pass SOS group have delivered food and drinking water to those stranded. Supplies had to be carried by hand through thick mud and unstable ground to reach them safely.

Meanwhile, in Hue City, prolonged heavy rains have caused widespread flooding and landslides, forcing the evacuation of more than 4,450 residents from low-lying and landslide-prone areas. Thirty-two out of 40 communes and wards in Hue City have been inundated, particularly along the Tam Giang–Cau Hai Lagoon.

Water levels on the Huong and Bo rivers remain dangerously high, with some points exceeding the third warning level. Local authorities have been regulating reservoirs and reinforcing riverbanks as more heavy rain is forecast through October 30.
