Vietnam, U.S. ink US$37.2 billion in cooperation deals

HCMC – Cooperation agreements and contracts worth a combined US$37.2 billion between Vietnamese and U.S. partners were signed and exchanged on February 18 in Washington, D.C. (local time), covering technology, digital transformation, aviation, and healthcare.

The signing ceremonies were witnessed by Vietnam’s Party General Secretary To Lam and senior officials from both countries and representatives, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

The agreements included several major aviation contracts. Vietnam Airlines signed a deal with Boeing to purchase 50 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The airline described the order as part of its strategy to support growth and expand domestic and regional connectivity.

Sun Phu Quoc Airways signed a separate agreement with Boeing to purchase 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline said the acquisition would strengthen its long-haul operations and expand international services.

Vietjet also put pen to paper on agreements with Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of RTX Corporation, to purchase and maintain engines for 44 Airbus A321NEO and A321XLR aircraft. The carrier signed another agreement with Griffin Global Asset Management to finance six Boeing 737-8 aircraft.

In telecommunications, Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology granted Starlink Services Vietnam Company Limited a license to provide satellite-based fixed and mobile telecommunications services.

In healthcare, Tam Anh General Hospital finalized a deal with Mevion Medical Systems to purchase the Mevion S250-FIT proton therapy system for cancer treatment. Vietnam will be the first country in Asia to deploy this system.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S. Nguyen Quoc Dung said the signed deals reflected expanding business cooperation between the two countries. He noted that Vietnam and the U.S. have become Comprehensive Strategic Partners after 30 years of normalized relations.
