VIMC opens Vietnam-Malaysia-India container shipping route

HCMC – The State-owned Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) inaugurated a container shipping route linking Vietnam, Malaysia and India today, November 25.

This Haiphong – Port Kland – Calcutta – Port Klang – SP-ITC route will link HCMC and Haiphong’s biggest ports with the largest gateways of India and receive goods transshipped from Nhava Sheva at Port Klang, the main gateway by sea into Malaysia.

With the launch of the shipping route, the transportation time would be shortened by over 10 days.

According to VIMC, since the Covid pandemic broke out, global supply chain disruptions have hindered the transport of goods. Vietnam’s import-export goods shipped overseas had to rely on foreign shipping lines and the number of container vessels visiting Vietnam and empty containers shipped to the country declined, resulting in an upsurge in shipping costs.

Currently, Vietnam’s import-export containers had to be gathered at some international transshipment ports in the country and the Southeast Asian region to be carried on vessels to ports in Europe and North America, as Vietnam had yet to open shipping routes directly linking to ports outside the Southeast Asian region.

Therefore, VIMC’s opening of the route directly linking to ports outside the region is expected to ease pressure on cargo transportation, stabilize the supply of transport services, and support domestic businesses.

Besides, the launch of the route had a significant meaning when VIMC expanded its business outside the Southeast Asian region, paving the way for Vietnam’s economy to advance in the post-Covid-19 period. This is also a positive signal for the country’s trading activities in the future.

Earlier, on October 26, a VIMC container ship passed through Malacca for the first time to transport goods to Malaysia and India.
