Hidden in Kim Tra Ward, Hue City, the embankment of Tho Son Lake has recently become a dreamy sanctuary for nature lovers.
Known for its expansive meadows of waving pink grass and its historical importance as a symbol of human resilience, this destination provides a peaceful retreat where the harmony of sky, mountains, and water forms an unforgettable landscape on the outskirts of the ancient capital.
Tracing back through history, Tho Son Lake is a man-made irrigation reservoir built between 1977 and 1982. Situated about 200 meters above sea level, the reservoir was created through the incredible determination of local people, who dedicated thousands of workdays to turn low-lying basins into a six-million-cubic-meter lake.
Today, it not only supplies water to 250 hectares of farmland across the region but also acts as a majestic “landscape painting” surrounded by rolling green mountains that stay lush year-round. Visitors to the lake can witness a mystical dawn as lingering fog covers the water’s surface or enjoy the golden afternoon sun casting long mountain shadows onto the shimmering, silver-like ripples.
The most captivating feature of this area is the embankment covered in “pink fountain grass,” a tough plant that thrives on hillsides and creates a rustic, poetic beauty. On sunny days, the crimson-pink hues of the grass glow brightly, illuminating the entire space. However, the most enchanting transformation happens during sunrise and sunset when the grass turns into a soft, gentle pastel pink.
To reach this romantic meadow, nature lovers will pass through the historic La Chu village. From there, follow the Hue bypass road, turn right for about one kilometer, then turn left onto Tran Quang Diem Street, which leads directly to the lake. Once there, you will be greeted by a deep sense of peace and the irresistible charm of Hue’s untouched nature.
