HCMC – Local authorities are making efforts to ensure that the Tham Luong-Ben Cat-Nuoc Len canal infrastructure and environmental rehabilitation project will reach the finish line by late 2026.
Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Authority of Ho Chi Minh City (TCIP), the project’s investor, reaffirmed this commitment during a press briefing on March 26.
The VND9,030-billion project spanning 32 kilometers, connecting HCMC with Tay Ninh and Dong Nai provinces, is currently 67% complete. While embankment and sewage components are nearly finished (98%), roadwork and supporting infrastructure lag at 57%.
The project, according to the investor, is reeling from soaring fuel prices and logistics costs. Currently, only 50% of the required 800,000 cubic meters of stone and 30% of the 180,850 tons of asphalt have been secured. To safeguard the abovementioned deadline, the investor is taking a serious approach with underperforming contractors.
Measures include contract penalties and reassigning workloads to more capable firms. Simultaneously, the city is seeking approval for new disposal sites and proposing the designation of specific quarries, alongside importing sand from Cambodia to stabilize the supply chain. Once completed, the project is expected to transform the local urban landscape and significantly improve the quality of life for millions of residents in the region.
