HCMC – Vietnam is considering plans to build a large-scale airport on coastal waters in Khanh Hoa Province, the first project of its kind in the country, as it seeks to expand aviation infrastructure and strengthen long-term capacity.
The Ministry of Construction has sought approval for a revised national airport development plan for 2021 to 2030, with a vision to 2050.
The proposal includes the development of the Van Phong Airport in Van Thang Commune, around 65 kilometers north of Nha Trang, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
Under the plan, the airport would be built on nearshore waters across about 497.1 hectares, making it the first airport in Vietnam constructed entirely on water if approved.
Van Phong Airport is planned to meet 4E standards, with a projected capacity of about 1.5 million passengers a year by 2030, rising to 2.5 million by 2050.
The project is intended to become a key air transport gateway for the South Central Coast and Central Highlands regions, helping drive economic and social development, tourism, logistics and international integration, while supporting growth of Van Phong Economic Zone and surrounding areas.
Under the revised national airport development plan for 2021 to 2030, with a vision to 2050, the Ministry of Construction also proposed building Mang Den Airport and upgrading Quang Tri Airport from 4C to 4E standards to meet long-term operational demand.
