HCMC – Five metro lines linking Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi Railway Station and major urban areas in Hanoi, got off the ground on June 22 and are scheduled to be completed by 2030.

The projects include Metro Line 1, running from Thuong Tin through Ngoc Hoi, Hanoi Railway Station and Yen Vien to Noi Bai Airport; Metro Line 2, connecting Noi Bai airport with Tran Hung Dao, Thuong Dinh and the southern part of the city; and Metro Line 8, stretching from Hoa Lac through Mai Dich and Beltway 3 to Duong Xa.

The remaining projects are Metro Line 10, linking Dong Anh, Vo Chi Cong, Beltway 3, Beltway 2.5 and Times City; and Metro Line 14, running from Thang Long Bridge through Hong Ha to Gia Lam.

The projects are expected to be substantially completed by 2030 and will form part of a broader network linking major transport hubs and new urban developments, including Ngoc Hoi, Hoa Lac, Co Loa and Ocean Park.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Hanoi People’s Committee Chairman Vu Dai Thang said the event marked the city’s largest urban railway investment to date and represented a shift from developing individual lines to building an integrated metropolitan network.

Urban rail has been designated as the backbone of Hanoi’s long-term development strategy, supporting transit-oriented development (TOD), easing traffic congestion and improving regional connectivity, he said.

A consortium comprising Vinhomes and VinSpeed has been appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for all five projects.

Under Hanoi’s long-term master plan, the capital aims to develop a metro and urban railway network of about 979 km. Including national and regional rail links, the total rail system is projected to reach nearly 1,200 km.

Hanoi currently operates the Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro line and the elevated section of the Nhon-Hanoi Railway Station line. The city plans to build around 500 km of metro and urban rail by 2035, with the remaining sections scheduled for completion between 2036 and 2045.
