HCMC – “Speak to Inspire, Vietnam”, the first English public speaking competition with sustainability as its theme, has been launched to raise the local community’s awareness over sustainability.
The competition is being organized by NPX Point Avenue and Netflix, in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam. Open to Vietnamese students between the ages of 11 and 24, “Speak to Inspire, Vietnam” is aimed at spurring meaningful conversations on topics such as environmental conservation and climate change.
In the context of population growth, urbanization and global warming threatening sustainability, the competition is expected to provide a forum for Vietnamese youth to discuss and enhance their understanding of sustainability and global issues.
“Speak to Inspire, Vietnam” consists of three stages, across three competing categories comprising Speech, Storytelling, and Debate. To apply, students from junior, senior, and university levels will need to submit a five-minute video in which they can choose to present, tell a story, or debate a sustainability topic via the website speak2inspire-asia.com from January 10 to February 9, 2022.
The submitted videos will be judged based on their content, strategy, and style by a panel of national and international experts to determine the top 100 speakers to advance to the second round. Finalists will be invited to partake in a hands-on intensive training camp led by international subject matter experts and a final showcase.
“We are very excited to partner with the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam and NPX Point Avenue to bring Speak to Inspire, Vietnam to the country and raise greater awareness over sustainability,” said Victoria Furniss, vice president of Global Public Policy at Netflix.
Holly Lindquist Thomas, chief of the Environment, Science, Technology and Health Section at the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam, believes that the initiative will prepare young leaders to tackle serious issues such as climate change and sustainability.
“In recent years, the U.S. Government has invested millions of dollars for local communities through regional environmental programs such as the Mekong-U.S. partnership. We are proud to work with our partners to secure a brighter future for the next generation,” she said.
In related news, the American Center in Vietnam will organize a series of do-it-yourself workshops with interesting ideas on how to transform last year’s calendars, old magazines, and other seemingly-useless objects into beautiful greeting cards, lucky red envelopes, and lanterns.
Joining the Tet Craft Workshop of the series, participants will be able to create beautiful handmade gifts for friends and family, learn useful tips for living a greener life, and enhance their Tet holiday English vocabulary.
The Tet Craft Workshop will be conducted in Vietnamese and English from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
