CAN THO – The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho welcomed more than 178,000 tourists between January 31 and February 5, or during the Lunar New Year holiday, Tet, up 10.3% year-on-year.
Nguyen Hoang Diem, head of the Tourism Management Division under the Can Tho Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, told The Saigon Times on February 5 that apart from the spike in the number of travelers to the city during the Lunar New Year holiday, lodging facilities in the city served 24,840 guests, up 15.2% year-on-year, while the city saw revenue from tourism amount to an estimated VND40.6 billion, up 19.5% against the year-ago figure.
No Covid infections were detected among tourists in the past six days. Visitors and tourist sites strictly followed Covid safety protocols, including masking and disinfecting.
Can Tho City has 616 lodging facilities with over 10,000 rooms, 37 tourist destinations and 63 tour operators, Diem said, adding that many facilities have resumed their operations during this Tet.
In addition to popular tourist sites such as Con Son, My Khanh, Cai Rang Floating Market, Hieu’s Cottage, Tan Loc Islet and Ninh Kieu Pedestrian Bridge, many new tourist areas, including Ninh Kieu spring flower garden, Ong Lang Town, Phi Yen and the expanded buckwheat flower garden are also attractive to visitors.
Specialties, folk games and rural activities in the Mekong Delta city are the core of tourism products in the region.
Vuu Chan Hung, chairman of the Can Tho Tourism Association, expects the city’s tourism sector, including the local and international segments, to recover strongly in 2022.
Le Thanh Phong, vice chairman of the Mekong Delta Tourism Association, said that after the Tet holiday, the association would hold a conference themed “Establishing a green corridor connecting tourism in the Mekong Delta provinces with Can Tho City” to present multiple solutions to the recovery of tourism.
