HCMC – While many localities in central Vietnam have just been battered by torrential rain and heavy flooding, another low pressure zone that has developed in the East Sea is forecast to hit the central region before strengthening into a tropical depression today, October 10.
As of 1 p.m. yesterday, the low pressure area was spotted some 360 kilometers northwest of Song Tu Tay Island of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
In the next 24 hours, the system is predicted to move west-northwest at around 10 kilometers per hour and gain strength to become a tropical depression.
By 1 p.m. on October 10, the tropical depression may be centered some 240 kilometers north-northeast of Song Tu Tay Island, packing strong winds at 40-60 kilometers per hour, gusting at level 9.
In the next 24-48 hours, it will possibly move west-northwest at 10-15 kilometers and could intensify.
Medium to heavy rain has dampened the central localities from Ha Tinh to Binh Dinh. Provinces from Quang Binh to Thua Thien-Hue have seen heavy downpours with rainfall measuring 100-200 millimeters.
From tonight till tomorrow, the impact of a tropical convergence zone passing through the central region and a cold spell is likely to cause torrential rain in many central provinces.
