HCMC – In the aftermath of the arrest of Nguyen Ngoc Thuy, the owner of the Apax Leaders English centers, 20 such centers have ceased operations in HCMC, with an additional 19 centers expected to face the same fate.

The HCMC Department of Education and Training reported that since the end of March, 20 Apax Leaders centers have been shuttered. The fate of the other 19 centers hangs in the balance due to operational infractions, according to the department.

While Apax has stated that two centers in District 6 and Phu Nhuan will relocate and resume operations in June, the department remains cautious, considering potential disruptions that may impact their functioning.

The decision to close these centers comes following the arrest of EGroup Chairman Nguyen Ngoc Thuy, the owner of Apax Leaders, on charges of fraudulent appropriation of property.

Since late 2022, numerous parents whose children attended courses at Apax Leaders centers in HCMC, Hanoi, Daklak, and Danang have complained about the centers’ performance and demanded tuition refunds.

In HCMC, Apax Leaders still owes substantial sums to various parties, including VND94 billion in debt to learners. Following Thuy’s arrest, Apax ceased refunding tuition fees and certifying indebtedness with learners.
