HCMC – More than 72% of businesses in the Mekong Delta are negatively impacted by natural disasters and climate change, the highest rate in Vietnam, according to the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).

This figure was revealed at a conference on improving the investment environment for a green and sustainable economy held in Dong Thap Province’s Cao Lanh City on July 31. The event, organized by VCCI and Dong Thap Province, brought together leaders from provinces, business associations, and major companies in the Mekong Delta.

The Mekong Delta, known for its fertile soil and extensive waterways, is less affected by typhoons but faces increasing challenges from flood tides, saltwater intrusion and drought. The region is also at significant risk from climate change and rising sea levels.

The 2023 Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI) showed that eight provinces in the Mekong Delta are among the top 30 nationwide for quality of governance, making it the third-highest region in the country for PCI scores.

However, businesses have reported a decline in confidence levels regarding legal frameworks, government dynamism, market entry, administrative reform, ease of access to land and informal costs.

The Mekong Delta has also performed well in the Provincial Green Index (PGI), with nine provinces in the delta in the top 30 nationwide. To build on this, the region must better enforce environmental protection standards, develop innovative climate adaptation solutions, and promote research and development of appropriate technologies for local businesses.

Attracting responsible investment and implementing programs to help businesses green their operations will be crucial for sustainable development.

Hoang Quang Phong, vice chairman of VCCI, said that the Mekong Delta is one of the three most vulnerable deltas in the world due to climate change. The region faces significant economic, social, and environmental challenges.
