HCMC – The HCMC Department of Transport and its consultants have proposed three investment options for a coastal road connecting the city with the Mekong Delta, with a total cost ranging from VND38 trillion to VND62 trillion.
According to the city’s transport department, Vietnam’s 2021-2030 road network master plan, with a vision toward 2050, identifies the coastal corridor as a key transportation route, including a southern coastal section passing through HCMC.
Preliminary studies, conducted in collaboration with Transport Engineering Design Incorporated (TEDI), outline a primary coastal road from Go Cong Dong District in Tien Giang Province to Phuoc An Port in Dong Nai Province.
The main route spans 45.5 kilometers, including a 10.5-kilometer section in Dong Nai. The first phase will cover 34.5 kilometers, with the remaining 11 kilometers to be completed in a later phase. The eight-lane route, including two frontage roads, is estimated to cost VND38 trillion. In addition to the primary route, two alternative connections to Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province have been proposed.
The second option includes the main route and a connection to Ba Ria-Vung Tau’s coastal road via a Can Gio sea-crossing bridge. This alternative would shorten the travel distance by 40 kilometers compared to existing routes, but the estimated cost would exceed VND62 trillion.
The third option features the main route with a connection to the Cai Mep Port area, reducing travel by 32 kilometers compared to current plans. This proposal is projected to cost over VND42 trillion.
Key infrastructure along the main route includes large bridges, such as Soai Rap (5,080 meters), Dong Tranh (1,440 meters), Nga Bay (2,570 meters), and Thi Vai 1 (1,440 meters). The second option would add the Can Gio-Vung Tau bridge (10,080 meters), while the third option includes an additional Thi Vai 2 bridge (2,570 meters).
The HCMC Department of Transport has submitted the proposals to the Department of Construction, which is leading the revision of the city’s master zoning plan.
Authorities are also coordinating with Dong Nai, Tien Giang, and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces to finalize connection points and integrate the coastal road into regional planning.
