HCMC – The Ministry of Transport has approved an adjusted zoning plan to upgrade the Con Dao airport in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province from the current capacity of 400,000 to two million passengers per year.

Being a domestic airport, Con Dao airport, which is located in the island district of the same name, serves both civil and military flights. It will be upgraded to meet the 4C standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization, reported Tuoi Tre newspaper.

Currently, the airport allows only daytime flights and serves 400,000 passengers per year. According to a previously approved plan, the airport will serve 500,000 passengers a year by 2025. However, under this approved adjusted zoning plan, it will serve two million passengers and transport 4,400 tons of cargo per year.

Its runway is 1,830 meters long and 30 meters wide, receiving ATR 72 and other small aircraft. Once it is upgraded, the existing 1,830-meter-long runway’s width will be increased from 30 to 45 meters to receive large jets such as A320, A321 and equivalent aircraft.

The apron will also be expanded to accommodate eight aircraft, instead of the current four. Besides, a parallel taxiway and three new taxiways will be built to connect with the runway.

As for other areas of the upgrade, there will be a new air traffic control tower on the east side of the passenger terminal, a synchronous airport beacon system and a landing gear system.
