HCMC – Danang International Airport has begun work on a project worth nearly VND1.5 trillion to expand its international passenger terminal and thus raise its annual capacity to six million passengers.

The project for Terminal 2 (T2) broke ground on May 19, reported the Vietnam News Agency. It is being developed by Danang International Terminal Investment and Operation JSC (AHT).

The expansion aims to reduce congestion as international passenger traffic continues to exceed the terminal’s original design capacity.

In 2019, T2 handled more than 7.1 million passengers, compared with its designed capacity of four million passengers per year. International passenger numbers remained high in 2024 and 2025.

The project will add around 3,600 square meters, bringing the terminal’s total area to more than 21,000 square meters.

After completion, the number of check-in counters will increase from 54 to 85. Boarding gates connected to jet bridges will rise from four to seven.

The baggage handling system will also be upgraded, with doubled capacity for departure baggage conveyors and additional arrival baggage carousels.

Construction is expected to take 12 months. The upgraded terminal is intended to support growth in tourism and international trade during the 2026-2030 period.
