HCMC – Dau Tieng, the country’s largest reservoir, has released over 5.18 million cubic meters of water over a 24-hour period to fight saltwater intrusion and improve water quality in the Saigon River system.
The controlled water discharge began at 2:00 p.m. on April 3 and concluded at the same time on April 4, with a consistent flow rate of 60 cubic meters per second.
This first discharge of 2025 was aimed at supporting residential and agricultural water supply in downstream areas, including HCMC, Binh Duong and Long An provinces.
Officials said the water release played a critical role in curbing saline water intrusion, which has become increasingly severe during the dry season. Millions of residents rely on the Saigon River for daily use and farming.
Following this enhanced release, the Southern Irrigation Exploitation One Member Limited Liability Company will continue regulated water releases to maintain flow in accordance with the inter-reservoir operation process for the Dong Nai River basin, as stipulated in Decision No. 1895/QD-TTg issued on December 25, 2019.
