Five dead, one missing due to heavy downpours in northern Vietnam

HCMC – Heavy rains in many parts of northern Vietnam over the past few days have left five people dead, one missing and many injured.

According to the steering committees for natural disaster control in Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Ha Giang, Bac Kan, Dien Bien, Bac Giang, Thai Nguyen and Cao Bang, torrential rains between May 9 and 12 have led to human and economic losses in the northern provinces.

In Lang Son, a local woman identified as Trieu Thi Lan, aged 40, was killed due to landslides on the morning of May 10. In Bac Kan, Dinh Thanh Nam, a local five-year-old boy, was confirmed dead after being washed away by floodwaters. In Thai Binh, lightning strikes killed three people—a 42-year-old woman, a 16-year-old boy and a 52-year-old man.

Besides, one resident in Cao Bang reportedly went missing after being washed away by floodwaters, while three people in Bac Kan were injured by the unfavorable weather conditions.

Regarding property, 11 houses collapsed, while 231 others were damaged. Further, over 2,200 hectares of paddy and fruit was inundated, and 3.99 hectares under fish farming was affected.

The heavy rain also resulted in land erosion along some roads in Bac Giang and Dien Bien. Two bridges in Bac Kan were damaged.
