HCMC – Luu Binh Nhuong, a former deputy of the National Assembly (NA), has been detained by the police of Thai Binh Province on alleged charges of extortion.

Even though he is not a legislator of the NA in the current 15th tenure, he is still serving as deputy head of the People’s Aspirations Commission of the NA Standing Committee.

Following the approval of the Thai Binh Province People’s Procuracy, the provincial police searched Nhuong’s residence yesterday, November 14, in an expanded investigation into a case involving Pham Minh Cuong, 37, who had a previous criminal record. Cuong, a resident of Thai Binh Province, has been accused of extortion under Article 170 of the Penal Code.

During the search of Nhuong’s home, the police collected items and documents.

Nhuong, 60, served as a National Assembly deputy in the 14th tenure (2016-2021). Prior to that, he had 22 years’ experience as a lecturer at Hanoi Law University.

Later, he assumed the role of chief of staff at the General Department of Civil Judgment Enforcement under the Ministry of Justice, where he provided counsel to the Central Steering Committee for Judicial Reform.
