HCMC – The General Statistics Office (GSO) on March 1 started a general economic census, which is conducted every five years, across the country.

Nguyen Trung Tien, deputy head of GSO and a member of the national steering committee for the general economic census, said the results of the census would be an important foundation for the projection of the country’s gross domestic product, localities’ gross regional domestic product and other criteria, the local media reported.

According to GSO, they will focus on the identification information, sectors, operation models, employees, production and business performance and costs, technology application, capital access and international integration process of the entities.

Data will be collected from enterprises and cooperatives between March 1 and May 30, and from associations until April 30.

In addition, the survey of household businesses and religious organizations will take place from July 1 to July 30.

As for the information collection methods for each groups, Tien said enterprises, cooperatives and associations would provide their information on a portal for the general economic census.

Meanwhile, interviewers will meet with household businesses and religious organizations to ask for necessary information.

The preliminary results of the census are expected to be announced in December this year and the official results in January 2022.

According to the 2017 general economic census, the number of entities in the administrative sectors tend to drop, while those in the economic sectors, especially enterprises, tend to rise.

Specifically, among the total of over 5.86 million units, there were nearly 517,900 operational enterprises, employing more than 14 million laborers.

Thus, socioeconomic development policies in the 2012-2017 period were effective to downsize the State apparatus and create favorable conditions for the economic sectors.
