General Phung Quang Thanh passes away

HCMC – General Phung Quang Thanh, former member of the Politburo and former Minister of National Defense, passed away at 3:45 a.m. today, September 11, at his residence in Hanoi due to illness, according to the Central Committee on Health Care for Senior Governmental Officials.

The memorial service and burial ceremony for him will be announced later.

General Phung Quang Thanh was born in 1949 in the northern province of Vinh Phuc. He was a member of the 9th, 10th and 11th Party Central Committee, member of the Politburo of the 10th and 11th Party Central Committee and deputy of the National Assembly in the 11th, 12th and 13th tenures.

He was promoted to the rank of General in July 2007 and served as Vietnam’s Minister of National Defense from 2006 to 2016.

He was also honored with the title “Hero of the People’s Armed Forces” and many other noble titles.
