HCMC – The northern province of Hai Duong expects to become a centrally-governed city as outlined in a plan approved by the prime minister on December 19.

The province plans to achieve an annual economic growth rate of 9.5% and elevate its average per-capita gross regional domestic product (GRDP) to VND180 million by 2030. By 2050, Hai Duong envisions itself as a green and modern industrial hub, playing a pivotal role in advancing the development of the Red River Delta region.

As part of this plan, Hai Duong will actively seek foreign investments in various sectors, including home appliances, smart electronics, mechanical engineering, and high-quality accessories, and will transition towards large-scale production of sensor products and chips.

Last year Hai Duong’s economy expanded by 9%, ranking 27th in the country. The estimated GRDP per capita reached VND87 million, equivalent to US$3,746.

Vietnam currently has five centrally-governed cities: Hanoi, HCMC, Haiphong, Danang and Can Tho. Five other provinces are slated to develop into centrally-governed cities, including Bac Ninh, Thua Thien-Hue, Khanh Hoa, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, and Hai Duong.
