HCMC – The Hanoi-HCMC route continued to be among the top 10 busiest domestic air routes globally in January-June, according to Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport.

In the first six months of the year, Noi Bai International Airport handled over 16.5 million passengers and more than 100,000 takeoffs and landings.

During the same period, Terminal T2 in Noi Bai alone served over seven million international passengers. The terminal is currently being expanded to raise annual capacity to 15 million.

Despite growing demand, the airport maintained an average on-time performance (OTP) of 74% from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025.

Flight delays were mostly caused by airline operational issues, accounting for 93.8%. Other reasons included weather (1.8%), airport equipment and services (0.8%), air traffic control (2.5%), and miscellaneous factors (1.1%).

Airport authorities said efforts are being made to improve this rate through better coordination with airlines and ground service units.

To enhance flight operations, Noi Bai officially launched Phase 1 of the Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) model on February 1, 2024. The model allows relevant units to share information and make coordinated decisions using real-time flight data.

In the first half of this year, 100,002 flights were operated under the A-CDM model. The system has helped reduce ground delays, optimize runway and parking space usage, and improve flight punctuality.

Noi Bai is also coordinating with the Air Traffic Flow Management Center (ATFMC), airlines, and service providers to apply Level 3 Multi-Nodal Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) in Vietnam. The approach is expected to help airlines better manage flight schedules and avoid airborne holding caused by weather, military operations, or major national events.

Meanwhile, the expansion of Terminal T2 is being carried out while maintaining operations. Once completed by the end of 2025, the upgraded terminal is expected to ease overcrowding and enhance service capacity.
