HCMC – A 212-kilometer cross-regional expressway linking the Ha Tien international border gate in An Giang Province to Can Tho City and Ca Mau Province is being proposed, with total investment estimated at more than VND121.77 trillion.
The project is outlined in a pre-feasibility study submitted by the My Thuan Project Management Unit (PMU My Thuan) to the Ministry of Construction for appraisal. The four-lane expressway is designed as a strategic east-west way, forming an international economic corridor connecting the Mekong Delta with Cambodia and Thailand.
Under the preferred alignment, the route would begin at National Highway 80 at the Ha Tien border gate and end at National Highway 1 in Ca Mau Province. With a design speed of 100km/h and a road width of 24.75 meters, the option is considered more feasible in terms of capital mobilization compared to an elevated alternative estimated at over VND175 trillion.
To optimize funding and construction, the project would be divided into four independent sub-projects. Specifically, Sub-project 1, located in An Giang Province, would span about 45 kilometers; Sub-project 2, also in An Giang, about 52.7 kilometers; Sub-project 3, running through An Giang Province and Can Tho City, about 49.7 kilometers; and Sub-project 4, crossing Can Tho City and Ca Mau Province, about 46.45 kilometers. Two large rest stops are also planned along the route, in Hon Dat Commune in An Giang Province and Hong Dan Commune in Ca Mau Province, with construction and operation to be conducted under socialized investment schemes to ease pressure on the state budget.
If the feasibility study is approved by late 2026, the project is expected to complete technical design and contractor selection before construction begins in the third quarter of 2027. The expressway is targeted for completion by 2030, helping complete the southern expressway network and enhancing the efficiency of key north-south routes. The project is expected to improve logistics capacity and drive economic restructuring in remote and border areas in the southwestern region.
