HCMC – Hanoi was jolted by a 4.0-magnitude earthquake early this morning, March 25, originating in the outlying district of My Duc.
The quake struck at 8:05 a.m., at a focal depth of 16 kilometers and its epicenter located 50 kilometers away from the city center, according to the Institute of Geophysics.
Residents in various districts of Hanoi, including Ung Hoa, Chuong My, Thanh Oai, Phu Xuyen, Thuong Tin, and Luong Son in Hoa Binh Province, reported feeling the tremors. Those residing in high-rise buildings in Ha Dong, Hoang Mai, Thanh Xuan, and Nam Tu Liem districts experienced minor shaking.
There have been no reports of damage thus far.
Hanoi has encountered several tremors in recent years, often triggered by earthquakes in neighboring regions. The most recent 5.4-magnitude quake occurred at the border of Myanmar and China on November 17, 2023, causing buildings in Hanoi to shake.
Experts attribute Hanoi’s susceptibility to earthquakes to its location within the fault zone of the Red River and Chay River. Over the years, the city has experienced quakes ranging from 5.1 to 5.5 due to its geological position.
