HCMC – The Hanoi People’s Council will hold an extraordinary meeting on September 25 to appoint Chu Ngoc Anh as the city’s new chairman, replacing Nguyen Duc Chung, who has been suspended from all leadership positions and detained for allegedly appropriating the State’s secret files.

Chung is also being investigated for his involvement in accounting irregularities, money laundering and serious violations of bidding regulations at local firm Nhat Cuong Mobile and the Hanoi People’s Committee’s mismanagement of State assets and wastefulness.

Born in Ba Vi District of Hanoi, Chu Ngoc Anh, 55, is currently Minister of Science and Technology and will hold the post until the National Assembly’s meeting in October when he will be relieved of the post. He was appointed as deputy secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee on September 18.

Anh has a PhD degree and has held various important positions in the Party and the Government, such as member of the Party’s 12th Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Phu Tho Provincial Party committee and chairman of Phu Tho Province. He was elected as Deputy Minister of Science and Technology in September 2015 before becoming minister in April 2016.

Anh also worked at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology and the State Agency for Technology Innovation.
