HCMC explains early establishment of Thu Duc City

Must read

HCMC – The HCMC government has to complete the procedures needed to establish Thu Duc City and submit them to the higher authorities for approval during this year or will have to wait for at least five years to do so, said Tran Luu Quang, deputy chief of the city’s Party Committee.

Quang was offering an explanation over why the city decided to urgently implement a major plan to set up Thu Duc City at a meeting on October 1. As per the plan, Thu Duc City will be founded by merging districts 2, 9 and Thu Duc in HCMC and will be under the jurisdiction of HCMC.

The National Assembly (NA) and People’s Councils elections are scheduled to take place in May next year. Therefore, the HCMC government has to facilitate efforts to submit the plan to an upcoming NA session. If everything goes smoothly, the city will organize elections to set up the People’s Committee, the People’s Council and the political system for Thu Duc City by May 2021, he said.

Explaining why the city planned to merge the three districts to establish Thu Duc City, Quang said that HCMC is the country’s economic hub, and as such, it has to take the lead and grow in line with global trends. The city will gradually lag behind others if it does not merge the three districts to establish Thu Duc City, the official explained.

Thu Duc City would cover nearly 212 square kilometers to the east of HCMC and have a population of over one million people. It is envisaged to become an innovation and hi-tech town, promoting the growth of HCMC and the southeastern provinces.

The HCMC government is working to tackle the remaining inadequacies related to the three districts to prepare for the purpose of merging, Quang said.
