HCMC, Hanoi face severe shortages of auto inspectors

HCMC – HCMC and Hanoi City are grappling with significant shortages of auto inspectors, as over 900 inspectors nationwide are facing prosecution over bribe taking.

Despite ongoing recruitment and training, Vietnam Register has managed to replace less than 50% of the missing workforce since 2023. In Hanoi, 55% of inspectors are under prosecution, while in HCMC, 40% are under investigation.

If these inspectors are convicted, the situation could deteriorate further, potentially leaving only two inspection centers operational in each city. This could result in severe delays and long waits for auto owners needing to have their vehicles inspected.

Vietnam Register has proposed regulatory changes, including not revoking the professional permits of inspectors who receive suspended sentences or non-custodial rehabilitation. The Ministry of Transport is currently seeking feedback from relevant agencies to finalize these proposals.

Both HCMC and Hanoi have requested support from the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Defense to bolster the inspector workforce. Additionally, Vietnam Register is working closely with local authorities to maintain inspection services.

Legal proceedings related to the inspection sector scandal are taking place from July 18 to October 18 in HCMC. This could cause further delays at inspection centers nationwide as indicted inspectors and other staff members may be required to attend court.
