HCMC – Although some organizations have been advertising the IAA driving license, Vietnam has yet to recognize this international driving license.

The Road and Railway Traffic Police Department said that many foreigners and overseas Vietnamese often use two types of international driving license – IAA and IDP.

The IAA license of the International Automobile Association, is issued by the International Automobile Association located in New York, while the IDP license, or the International Driving Permit, was granted by countries participating in the Convention on Road Traffic in 1968.

On social media, many individuals and organizations advertise IAA exchange services, claiming it is valid worldwide, including in Vietnam.

The department said that the international driving license was only issued by the relevant authorities participating in the Convention on Road Traffic according to Circular No.29.

Based on the law, IDP is the only international driving permit valid for use in Vietnam’s territory.

Other international driving licenses will not be recognized in Vietnam, including IAA.

The HCMC traffic police said that drivers presenting their IAA license will be fined. They must, instead, present their IDP permit and national driving license in accordance with the type of vehicle at the time of inspection.
