HCMC – The government of Lai Chau Province has proposed the Government allow it to build a domestic airport with an annual capacity of 500,000 passengers.

The provincial government said that some investors have shown interest in the airport project, the local media reported.

Lai Chau requested the Government authorize the province to execute the project under the public-private-partnership model.

The northern upland province added that it is prepared for the zoning and site clearance works.

The Lai Chau airport project had earlier been added to the national aviation transport development plan in 2018.

Accordingly, it was projected to be a joint-use airport by 2030. The airport will cover an area of 167 hectares in Tan Uyen Town, requiring some VND8 trillion in investment.

The airport project, once completed, is expected to become a driving force for the province’s socioeconomic growth and contribute to ensuring national defense and security.

The mountainous northwestern region of Vietnam has the Dien Bien airport in Dien Bien province. According to the Ministry of Transport’s plan, the region would have four domestic airports by 2030, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Sapa in Lao Cai and Na San in Son La.
