Lai Chau, Vinh Phuc rocked by mild quakes

HCMC – A series of quakes struck Lai Chau and Vinh Phuc provinces this morning, March 3, rattling local homes but causing no major damage.

The first quake, measuring 4.4 on the Richter magnitude and 16 kilometers in depth, hit Muong Te District in the mountainous province of Lai Chau at 4:49 a.m.

No injuries have been reported as the local administration is checking for damages and inspecting vital infrastructure such as hydropower plants, according to the national radio broadcaster Voice of Vietnam.

A few hours later, the second earthquake of magnitude 3.2 shook Yen Lac District in the northern province of Vinh Phuc.

The quake’s focal depth was 16 kilometers and posed no risk of disaster, according to the Center for Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning under the Institute of Geophysics.

The two tremors followed a magnitude-3 quake that hit the mountainous province of Dien Bien on March 1. It shook homes but caused any damage.
