HCMC – The Government has set a mandatory target to complete and put the first phase of Long Thanh International Airport into commercial operation by the end of this year, according to a conclusion issued by Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc.
The directive, outlined in Notice No. 204/TB-VPCP dated April 21, aims to accelerate progress on the national flagship project following the successful first technical flight conducted at the airport in Dong Nai Province in late 2025.
While key milestones have been achieved, significant challenges remain due to the large volume of unfinished work, along with bottlenecks related to payments and rising material costs. To address these issues, the Government has instructed the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Construction to establish task forces to resolve payment procedures and ensure adequate supplies of construction materials.
The Ministry of Public Security has also been tasked with expediting investigations into violations linked to the project to clarify accountability, while ensuring that unrelated personnel can continue working to avoid disrupting construction progress.
Alongside core airport components, efforts to develop transport links are being stepped up. Dong Nai authorities have inspected and urged progress on two key routes, Road 25B and Road 25C, which will connect the airport with HCMC and major expressways.
Road 25B, designed with 10 lanes and an investment of nearly VND1.5 trillion, and Road 25C, costing around VND650 billion, are both scheduled for completion by this June. Authorities are pushing to complete full site clearance within April to enable contractors to accelerate construction and ensure synchronized infrastructure when the airport becomes operational later that year.
Long Thanh International Airport covers more than 5,300 hectares, with total investment for the entire project estimated at around US$16 billion. The first phase, valued at about US$5 billion, is designed to handle up to 100 million passengers per year.
