HCMC – A major plan is underway in Can Tho City to replace a 4.3-hectare landfill site that is obstructing the construction of the Can Tho-Ca Mau expressway.

Known as Landfill No. 8, the site contains 162,000 tons of waste and served as Can Tho’s main dumping ground for over 50 years before its closure two decades ago.

The current effort focuses on removing 67,000 tons of waste from a 1.95-hectare section that overlaps with the expressway route. This phase, costing over VND13 billion, is crucial for ensuring the expressway project remains on schedule.

The plan is expected to take 45 days, with a completion deadline of December 31. The waste removal process is divided into two phases: the ongoing first phase addresses the portion intersecting the expressway, while the second phase will involve a broader plan by the Can Tho City Department of Natural Resources and Environment to manage the remaining waste.

Landfill No. 8 is among several legacy landfill sites in Can Tho, which collectively house around 958,000 tons of waste. Other significant sites are located in O Mon, Co Do, and Thot Not districts. These aging landfills present environmental challenges, prompting authorities to seek long-term waste management solutions.

One such solution is a new solid waste treatment facility in Thoi Lai District, with a projected capacity of 750 tons per day by 2020, increasing to 1,000 tons per day by 2030.

The Can Tho-Ca Mau expressway is a vital infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth in the Mekong Delta region. The successful relocation of Landfill No. 8 marks a significant step toward the expressway’s completion, which is eagerly anticipated for its potential to transform the region’s transportation and development landscape.
