HCMC – Contractors have completed mountain tunneling for an expressway connecting Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces on the south-central coast, one month ahead of schedule, said local news reports.

A ceremony was held yesterday, April 3, to mark the completion of tunnel boring work. The construction of the tunnel falls under package 11-XL of the Quy Nhon-Chi Thanh segment, one of the 12 components of the North-South Expressway project.

Construction work on the 960-meter tunnel began on November 1, 2023. The tunnel traverses through Son Trieu Mountain in Phu Nhon Hoa Ward, An Nhon Town, and Phuoc An Commune, Tuy Phuoc District, Binh Dinh Province.

The right tunnel tube spans 535 meters in length, while the left tunnel tube measures 600 meters in length. Each tunnel has three lanes, designed to accommodate speeds of up to 120 km/h. The total investment in tunnel construction amounts to VND765.37 billion.

Speaking at the ceremony, contractors emphasized the significance of the Son Trieu Tunnel within package No. 11-XL of the project. Nguyen Anh Tuan, deputy director of Project Management Unit 85, highlighted the challenges of tunnel construction, particularly excavation and reinforcement in complex geological conditions.

Currently, contractors are accelerating the construction progress with the aim of putting the tunnel into operation by September 2025, three months ahead of the contract’s timeline, as instructed by the Ministry of Transport.
