HCMC – A new coastal and riverine transport route connecting Cai Cui Port in Can Tho and Cai Mep Port in Ba Ria-Vung Tau has been launched, cutting transit time for goods to 15 hours from the previous 48 hours, said local media reports.

Operated by VIMC Lines, the service runs two trips per week and is designed to handle dry and refrigerated containers, with the capacity to transport hundreds of containers per voyage.

It helps shorten the transport distance from 367 kilometers to about 200 kilometers, cutting shipping time by nearly 70% and enhancing the efficiency of the domestic supply chain in southern Vietnam.

On May 30, the first shipment arrived at the port, marking the official launch of the service. In the coming time, the Mekong Express route is expected to expand with new stops at Saigon Newport and Hiep Phuoc Port.

Beyond time and cost efficiency, the new service targets sustainable development, with the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 60% compared to road transport.

A real-time monitoring system for cargo and emissions has been integrated along the route, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2026.
