New daily Covid infections edge up

HCMC – The Ministry of Health this evening, April 19, confirmed 13,500 fresh Covid cases nationwide, inching up bìnection against yesterday.

Hanoi still recorded the highest number of new cases, at 1,022, followed by Phu Tho with 838 and Yen Bai with 605. Quang Ninh, Nghe An, HCMC, Vinh Phuc and Hai Duong detected 531-584 cases each. Other localities had 500 cases or below each.

Since the pandemic emerged in Vietnam, the country has reported nearly 10.5 million cases.

Over 124,000 Covid patients were announced to have recovered from the disease today, while the ministry reported 18 new Covid deaths.

In related news, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology has decided to allocate nearly 1.4 million doses of the Moderna Covid vaccine donated by the Australian Government to all provincial and municipal centers for disease control for the vaccination of children aged 5-11.

The new allocation will raise the total doses for the vaccination of this age group to over 2.3 million, the local media reported.

Under the decision, HCMC will receive the highest number at 193,800 doses, followed by Hanoi City with 104,000.

Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Quang Ninh and Ba Ria-Vung Tau will receive 13,600-51,000 doses each.

On April 14, the national institute allocated 921,600 Moderna doses to all 63 cities and provinces for the vaccination of this age group. As of April 18, over 19,500 doses had been administered to children aged 5-11.

The country has some 11.8 million children 5 to 11 who are eligible to be vaccinated, according to the General Department of Preventive Medicine under the ministry.
