HCMC – The Government presented to the legislature a proposal to resume the Ninh Thuan nuclear power development plan this afternoon, November 27, during the ongoing eighth session of the National Assembly.

If approved, the resumption of the plan will be included in the resolution of the 8th session which the 15th National Assembly will adopt.

Earlier, the Party Central Committee had already expressed strong support for restarting the country’s nuclear energy development plan, including the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project, during its plenum in Hanoi on November 25.

In its report to the NA, the Government underscored the necessity of nuclear power for ensuring energy security and achieving sustainable energy development. This aligns with Vietnam’s commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

The proposal includes a nuclear power development plan to assess the potential of various nuclear energy types and identify other viable locations for nuclear power plants.

The Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project, approved by the 12th NA in 2009, had two planned facilities: Ninh Thuan 1 and Ninh Thuan 2.

Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), the project owner, collaborated with Russia and Japan to prepare for the investment. Both countries conducted surveys, prepared site approval documents, and completed feasibility studies for the plants.

Following the suspension of the projects in 2016, the sites were designated as reserve land for energy. This designation ensures that they remain viable for future nuclear power development.

According to the Government, using these pre-studied locations offers significant advantages, saving time and cost associated with new research, surveys, and site selection.

The resumption of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project marks a major step in Vietnam’s efforts to enhance energy security and meet its sustainability goals.
