HCMC – More than 98% of Vietnam’s agricultural, forestry, and fishery production and trading facilities have been certified as compliant with food safety standards, according to the Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development.

The department reported that over 99% of food samples inspected met safety requirements, while more than 93% of businesses have signed commitments to follow food safety regulations. Its deputy director said these efforts lay the groundwork for expanding exports to demanding markets such as the EU, Japan, and South Korea.

Each year, authorities conduct between 25,000 and 30,000 inspections of agrifood businesses to handle violations and improve compliance awareness. The food safety management system has gradually been strengthened, contributing to consumer health protection and enhancing the reputation of Vietnamese goods in international markets.

By the end of last year, Vietnam had 8,274 traditional markets, 276 shopping centers, and 1,293 supermarkets, according to the Agency for Domestic Market Surveillance and Development. Food safety at these outlets has been monitored in line with existing regulations.

Supermarkets and food businesses in shopping centers are generally required to obtain food safety certificates. However, most vendors in traditional markets operate as small household businesses, with many yet to fully meet certification standards.
