HCMC – A 38-kilometer light rail route will be built to connect Thu Thiem new urban area of HCMC with the under-construction Long Thanh International Airport in neighboring Dong Nai Province, with a total estimated cost of VND40.5 trillion (US$1.77 billion).

Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh today, March 30, asked the Ministry of Transport to work with Dong Nai, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and HCMC to develop two light rail lines: Thu Thiem-Long Thanh airport and Bien Hoa-Vung Tau, reported VnExpress news site.

The Bien Hoa-Vung Tau rail line will start from the Trang Bom station to the Cai Mep-Thi Vai port terminal, with a total length of 84 kilometers. This railway will cost over VND50 trillion (US$2.18 billion).

These two projects are among a portfolio of national projects in need of foreign investment in the 2021-2025 period. The portfolio had been proposed by the Transport Ministry.

In December last year, Dong Nai proposed the Government give it authority to develop the two railways under the public-private partnership format.

The railway projects were also added to the country’s zoning plan to develop the railway network in the 2021-2030 period, with a vision toward 2050.
