Site clearance obstacle affects progress of Thu Thiem 2 Bridge

HCMC – Work on the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge project, which spans the Saigon River and connects HCMC’s District 1 with Thu Thiem Peninsula in District 2, had to be stopped due to site clearance issues, even though the project is 70% complete.

Site clearance at the Ba Son factory area in District 1 is hindering its progress, preventing the final span of the bridge from being completed, a representative of Dai Quang Minh Real Estate Investment Company, the investor of the project, told VnExpress on September 14.

The main part of the cable-stayed bridge has been completed, while the main support tower has seen 27 nodes of a total of 36 being completed. Up to now, 36 of 56 cables used for the construction of the VND3.1-trillion bridge have been installed.

The approach road from Nguyen Trung Ngan Street to the Ton Duc Thang Street next to the Ba Son Underground Station of the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line in District 1 to the bridge has also been completed.

In July, the HCMC government planned to hand over the cleared site in District 1 to complete the project prior to September 10, but failed to do so.

Many workers and engineers in charge of work in District 1 have left the construction site of the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge project, while some are still working in the support tower area of District 2.

The cable-stayed bridge has six lanes and a total length of some 1,400 meters, with the main section stretching 885.7 meters. It is designed to have a main support tower 113 meters high that arches toward Thu Thiem and will act as a gateway to the Thu Thiem new urban area.

Work on the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge project started in 2015 and was slated for completion in 2018. However, the project remains incomplete due to multiple obstacles. The bridge is set to be completed in September next year.
