HCMC – Tropical storm Fung-wong is expected to move into the East Sea early next week, potentially becoming the 14th storm to enter the area this year. Weather experts said the storm is unlikely to directly affect Vietnam.

According to the Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Center, a weak cold front will move eastward into northern Vietnam over the next two days, with additional cold air expected on November 11-12.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported this morning that Fung-wong currently packs winds of up to level 11, gusting to level 14, and may intensify into a super typhoon within the day. The storm is moving west-northwest at around 25 kilometers per hour.

Fung-wong is expected to approach Luzon Island in the Philippines before entering the northern East Sea around November 11. Although still distant, forecasting models show a low probability of direct landfall in Vietnam. However, the storm could bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rough seas to the northern and central parts of the East Sea in the coming days.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting noted that Fung-wong is likely to become the 14th storm in the East Sea this year. The storm is currently tracking northward, though recent updates show a slight westward shift in its projected path. The center said it is closely monitoring the storm’s developments.

Typhoon Kalmaegi, the 13th storm that has struck Vietnam, made landfall in Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, and Dak Lak provinces on the central coast on the night of November 6, causing severe damage and casualties. By this morning, it had weakened into a low-pressure system over southern Laos. Authorities continue to warn of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas of the central and south-central regions.
