Strolling around 13 entrance gates of ancient Hue Citadel

Thirteen gates of the ancient Hue Citadel in the central city of Hue are not only used for entrance and exit but also a tourist attraction for strolling around, taking pictures and studying about the historical culture of the ancient capital.

Hue Citadel consists of three parts covered by layers of walls. Each part has its own function, all towards the south (eastern deviation).

The outermost part includes 13 gates (11 road gates and two waterways). Meanwhile, Hoang Thanh (Imperial City) is in the middle having four gates and Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Purple City) having 14 gates.

The names of the 13 gates were carved by Chinese characters during the Nguyen Dynasty. Now, they all have Vietnamese names.
