Crops under solar: farming’s future?

Research indicates that the combination of agricultural production and solar energy significantly enhances economic efficiency. However, Vietnam needs clear and incentive policies to expand agrivoltaics on a larger scale. In the Mekong Delta and other parts of Vietnam, the combination of solar energy with cultivation, livestock, and aquaculture is gaining traction. Studies have shown that certain crops thrive in the shade of solar panels, providing farmers with additional incomes. Strategic crop selection for optimal yields At a recent workshop on the development potential of solar energy in agriculture held in Can Tho City, Vu Duong Quynh from the Department of Environmental Chemistry at the Institute of Agricultural Environment, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (which has now been restructured into the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), highlighted the benefits of the agriculture and solar co-location. He noted that this model not only boosts crop yields but also increases revenues for farmers. A pilot project in An Hoa Hamlet, Chau Lang Commune, Tri Ton District, An Giang Province has been testing crop viability under solar panels since 2021.
