HCMC – ThaiBinh Seed Group Joint Stock Company’s TBR39 rice variety was recognized as the finest fragrant rice at Vietnam’s Best Rice contest 2022, followed by ST24 and Loc Troi 28.

ST24 rice is a trademark of Ho Quang Tri Private Enterprise, whereas Loc Troi 28 rice is a specialty of Loc Troi Group.

The ST25 rice variety, the former winner and also produced by Ho Quang Tri Private Enterprise, did not find itself among the top three.

ThaiBinh Seed Group Joint Stock Company’s products also won first and third place in sticky rice nominations. The rice variety developed by Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute was awarded second place in the race.

Fragrant rice varieties account for around 25% of Vietnamese rice exports, according to Le Thanh Tung, deputy director of the Department of Plant Cultivation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Tung said the rice varieties in the competition were a notable representation of the fragrant domestic rice producing sector, with considerable commercialization and mass cultivation potential.

The top three fragrant rice varieties will compete in the World’s Best Rice 2022 contest in Thailand later this year, according to Nguyen Ngoc Nam, chairman of the event’s co-organizer, the Vietnam Food Association.

Previously, the rice variety ST25 won first place in 2019 and second place in 2020 at the competition.

As of November 2022, Vietnam sold rice varieties in 28 countries and territories, mostly in Asia and Europe. The country is now the third largest rice exporter after India and Thailand, the local media reported.
